When Vinni arrived in Cape Town a number of years ago, she was disappointed to find a very limited selection of cotton yarn in South
Africa and an even more limited selection of colours so she decided to source cotton yarn and dye it herself.

About embroidery
Embroidery entails the use of a variety of stitches and coloured threads to create a design on a piece of fabric. The design can be transferred onto the fabric before work commences or copied from a pattern. Experienced needlewomen create intricate and exquisite designs using complicated stitches. However, beginners can easily produce beautiful articles to decorate their homes.

Tapestries and cross-stitch are a good place to start. The wide variety of designs, patterns and kits available testifies to the growing popularity of these pastimes while providing designs to suit a wide range of tastes.

Originally tapestries were thick fabric in which coloured threads were woven to form a picture. Today the term is also used for embroidery on canvas that imitates the tapestry fabric. The picture is usually printed on the canvas and is covered by thread, usually wool, of the same colour. Stitches are worked diagonally and are all worked in the same direction.

Cross-stitch consists of two diagonal stitches that form an X. Some cross stitch patterns are printed onto the fabric while in counted cross-stitch the pattern is copied from a chart onto a blank piece of fabric. The chart consists of coded squares; each symbol corresponding to a specific colour yarn.

For those interested in taking up these hobbies a great place to find tips, encouragement and advise is a cross-stitch or embroiders guilds or your local stockist.

Happy stitching!
